Knowing How to Choose a Nursing Home or an Assisted Living Facility

When you reach a certain age, you start to ask yourself this question a lot, “How are mom and dad really doing?” The truth is, they often try to cover up their difficulties because they don’t want to worry you, and they don’t want to move into a nursing home. But a nursing home isn’t always the next step. In fact, many seniors don’t need a nursing home but instead a community where they can be provided for and looked after. In other words, they might just need an assisted living facility instead.

Because assisted living and nursing homes are often mistaken to be synonymous, it’s important to understand the differences between the two. And once you know which one best fits their needs, the conversation between you and your loved one can be easier.

Who Needs a Nursing Home?

The biggest thing you should be aware of regarding a nursing home is that this type of facility is for seniors who require around-the-clock monitoring and medical assistance. That means 24/7 your loved one would be looked after and helped due to their inability to take care of themselves or even act independently.

The patients in nursing homes suffer from severe, debilitating physical or mental conditions, which means they could be bedridden or wheelchair-bound, or just mentally unstable. This is why nursing homes require physician’s approval to be admitted.

Who is Best Suited for an Assisted Living Facility?

Assisted living facilities are, more than anything else, a community where seniors can be looked after and still thrive in their later years. Residents in Assisted Living may no longer be completely able to live in a house alone (especially due to all the responsibilities that come with a house) but they’re not entirely helpless either. While they may need some assistance in certain areas like laundry, housekeeping, medication management, and even bathing, they still want to maintain a social and active lifestyle. At Assisted Living, seniors can expect an apartment to themselves, restaurant-style dining, community events with other residents, transportation, and more.

Don't choose a nursing home. The Windsor is a much better choice for your loved one.

How Do I Choose?

The best person to help you with this decision will be your loved one’s physician. They will easily be able to tell you whether or not a nursing home is necessary for their care. But the point is, don’t wait until they need a nursing home to take action on what’s best for them. Explore your assisted living options in your area to see if they will be happy living in a community and if they will be safer than at home, alone.

Knowing When It’s Time To Transition

Don't choose a Hammond nursing home. The Windsor is a better choice!
It’s important to have open and clear conversations with your elderly family about their care. As time goes on, there may come a point when the senior in your life can’t take care of themselves like they used to. It can be difficult to see your family member move towards needing more consistent care, but to take it all on yourself can be taxing.

Taking care of our elderly loved ones and figuring out the best plan of care requires careful thought, research, and many different considerations. Whether exploring the differences between nursing home care and assisted/independent living, or just trying to navigate what options are available— at The Windsor Senior Living Community, we want to help you make the best choice for your loved ones.

Noticing the Signs

It’s important to take note of signs that your loved one may need to move towards assisted living or more attentive care. There are some general signs that your family member can’t take care of themself properly, and this usually refers to the inability to perform daily living activities (or ADLs).

If they are having trouble with any of the following, then it may be time to look into options for assisted care.

  • Dressing
  • Bathing
  • Feeding
  • Moving from their bed
  • Using the bathroom alone

If your family member has any severe or more debilitating medical conditions and you feel they require more round-the-clock care and more medical-based assistance, then looking at nursing home options in Hammond may be the best next step. At The Windsor, we provide high-quality care and assist with all aspects of daily living, but we want your family members to be cared for in the way that is best for them and their safety.

Other things to be aware of are signs of cognitive decline: like the inability to pay bills, cook meals, remember to take medicine, or clean their home. If you notice that your loved one is struggling to keep up with these tasks— it may be time for a conversation about moving into a more assisted style of care.

At The Windsor Senior Living, we can help you navigate what type of care is best for your loved one, whether that be a nursing home or an assisted living community.

We offer different levels of care based on the needs of your family member, so they can receive customized support and be shown the attention they need to thrive as they age.

Having the Conversation

It’s crucial to have open conversations often with your aging loved one about their care and health needs. Making them very much a part of the conversation will help ease the transition, as it can oftentimes be a delicate process. Accepting the fact that they need help with care can be a difficult hurdle, but ultimately will bring peace and reassurance to the whole family.

We want you to have access to all of the tools you need to make an informed decision about the best care moving forward, so please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions and concerns you have along the way. We are here to help you at each touchpoint of the process, and it’s our passion and pleasure to provide the best care in the area to seniors in our community.

4 Things to Consider About Senior Living on the Northshore

If you’re exploring senior apartments on the Northshore, you’re either from that area or live in New Orleans. It’s a great place to live in general. But it can be especially nice for people entering their golden years.

The Northshore offers a few senior living options, but there’s a difference between nursing homes and senior apartments. The Windsor provides apartments for senior residents. But another key benefit of The Windsor is that it’s also a senior living community.

Senior Apartments on the Northshore: Living Options at The Windsor

We do have a couple of different senior living choices available at The Windsor. Chiefly, these are the Independent Living and Assisted Living options.

Independent Living

Independent Living is for seniors who can largely still live independently. They are able to drive and require little assistance, they are just looking for a more carefree lifestyle, which we can certainly provide at The Windsor.

Independent living residents are provided two meals a day, 365 days a year. They also benefit from some light housekeeping services. And they’re provided with transportation to and from doctor’s appointments, local activities, and outings. We have six floor plans available for these apartments with Studio, 1 Bedroom, and 2 Bedroom options.

Assisted Living

Assisted Living residents need a little more care and attention. We’ve got a few different packages that highlight the different care services that are available, but we can also create custom packages to meet your needs. You can choose services a la carte from the following list:

  • Medication Reminders
  • Meal Delivery
  • Bathing Assistance
  • Dressing Assistance

We go above and beyond to help our residents live private and secure lives. It’s also important to us that these residents don’t feel isolated in any way. That’s why assisted living and independent living residents are on the same floors as each other. So each resident can feel that they are part of one community.

Assisted Living apartments come in six different floor plans with Studio, 1 Bedroom, and 2 Bedroom options. Additionally, we recently remodeled nine senior living apartments on the Northshore. These are convenient options for New Orleans or the Florida Parishes areas if family members want to be able to visit.

We know that creating a community for our residents is one of our most important responsibilities. And we take that to heart. To that end, we have a planned calendar of events that can keep even the most agile and active residents busy and healthy
